It can be intimidating
looking at a big, blank canvas. I know I was overwhelmed when given
the opportunity to design for Canvas Concepts. Hopefully this
article will show you how to have fun with canvas and feel
comfortable creating "outside the album!"
The 411 on Canvas
With scrapbookers in mind, Canvas
Concepts created canvases in many sizes -- from the large 24”
x 24” (great as wall pieces) to the smaller 4” x 4” (ideal for
adorable mini albums, tabletop projects and hanging from larger
canvases). Canvas Concepts just came out with Canvas Panels in a
variety of sizes which are great for making mini albums. The canvas
is pre-stretched, acid-free, archival safe and has finished sides.
Canvases are packaged in pairs and may include hardware (but are
also sold separately):
-
Top
Clips allow you to hang your canvas projects on the wall and
Canvas
Clips (included with larger-sized canvases) allow you to
hang canvases from one another vertically.
-
Hook
& Screw Eyes (included with smaller-sized canvases)
allow you to hook canvases together vertically and
horizontally.
-
Hinges
(available in brass and nickel) allow you to create mini albums
and other peek-a-boo projects.
Getting Started
Gather your supplies as you would
with any other scrapbooking or paper crafting project. A cool thing
about working with canvas is its durability; you can attach bulky or
heavy items and not worry! Designer Emelyn Magpoc once adhered a
train track to the top of a 12" x 24" canvas completing
the train-themed artwork she made for her son's bedroom! Designer
Michelle Tornay adhered chunky clock pieces and a bulky wooden
letter to her canvas project. (see below)

Although it isn't necessary to
paint canvas, it sure is fun! If you choose to paint, any formula
you normally use on scrapbooking projects will work (e.g. acrylic).
I've also used inks, color washes, dyes, and textured and crackle
paints. You can also cover the canvas with patterned paper and
cardstock. The possibilities are endless, so start scrapbooking with
canvas!
Recommended Supplies
In addition to your typical
scrapbooking supply stash, I recommend using the following:
-
Mod Podge - A finishing
treatment with any fixative is not necessary. I believe it is a
matter of personal choice and design. However, because your
canvas will most likely be displayed, Mod Podge will help
preserve your art and protect it from dust.
-
3L Photo Tape - Believe me,
we've tried every adhesive out there. After traveling around the
U.S. to different tradeshows with our canvas projects, we've
found that 3L Photo Tape holds the best. Remember you are
dealing with gravity so don't skimp on adhesive!
